FAQ
1. What’s the meaning behind “Bushwick Therapy”?
Bushwick Therapy is named after the neighborhood in Brooklyn where our office is located. Our logo, a window looking out at a mountain range, was inspired by a peaceful moment in Puerto Rico’s El Yunque rainforest. It’s a reminder of spaciousness, reflection, and connection, feelings we hope clients can tap into when working with us.
2. What’s your philosophy?
We focus on being present in the here and now. We believe the relationship between therapist and client is central, as it’s where safety, trust, and growth begin. We aim to show up as a real, grounded person in the room so clients feel safe enough to be real too. As we build a strong relationship, you can carry those skills into their lives outside of therapy.
3. What kinds of therapy do you offer?
We provide individual therapy for adults, couples therapy, and group therapy
4. Are sessions virtual, in-person, or both?
Both. We offer hybrid sessions (available in-person or virtually) and some that are fully virtual.
Our office is located at 255 McKibbin Street, Suite 016, Brooklyn, NY, 11207—right off the Morgan L stop.
5. What types of clients do you work best with?
Many of our clients are adult children of immigrants or second-generation folks navigating identity, family dynamics, anxiety, and disconnection. They often carry a lot of emotional responsibility and are ready to look more closely at their relationships with others and themselves.
We work best with clients who are open to reflecting, exploring their emotional patterns, and being curious about what’s coming up in the room.
6. What kinds of clients might not be a good fit?
We are not the right fit for clients experiencing active disordered eating, addiction, or those in a crisis requiring immediate risk management. Also, we find our therapeutic approaches work best when clients are ready to be emotionally present. If someone isn’t sure why they’re coming or isn’t able to open up, it may not be the right time to work together.
7. How would your clients describe you?
Clients often say we’re grounded, honest, warm, and insightful. We can hold difficult emotions without judgment and bring some lightness or humor when it fits. We want people to feel like they’re not alone in the process and that I’m right there with them.
8. What makes your practice different?
Our work centers on people with marginalized identities, particularly first- and second-generation clients looking to break intergenerational patterns. We are not just aware of cultural context—we live it. We help clients differentiate what’s truly theirs from what’s been passed down or shaped by larger systems. We also have a physical office in a location where in-person therapy is less common.
9. What approaches or training inform your work?
We use a cultural relational framework and focus on somatic awareness, trauma education, and present-moment work. We name the impact of oppressive systems and help clients reconnect with their bodies as a guide to emotion and decision-making. We have completed training through the Trauma Research Foundation, Collectively Rooted with Linda Thai, and the Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy.
10. What are your rates? Do you take insurance?
We offer a sliding scale ranging from $150- 225 depending on clinician experience and client need. Check out our therapists page to learn more about what fees and insurances each therapist offers!
We accept Oxford, Oscar, Aetna, BCBS and United insurance plans, and we are contracted through Headway. We also provide monthly superbills if you're using out-of-network benefits. Please contact us if you have questions about using your insurance for therapy.
11. Do I need to have been to therapy before to work with you?
Not at all. Many clients are coming to therapy for the first time, often because they didn’t grow up with it being talked about or accessible. Others have been to therapy in the past and are looking for something deeper, more relational, or culturally attuned
12. What areas do you serve?
We work with clients throughout New York, especially Brooklyn and Queens, including Bushwick, Bed-Stuy, Williamsburg, Greenpoint, and Ridgewood. Virtual sessions are available for clients anywhere in the state.
